Dir. Robert Altman. 1985, 106 mins. 35mm from Park Circus. With Sam Shepard, Kim Basinger, Harry Dean Stanton, Randy Quaid. In the early 1980s, Altman turned his formidable filmmaking skills to a series of stage-to-screen adaptations, such as Come Back to the 5 and Dime, Jimmy Dean, Jimmy Dean; Streamers; and Secret Honor. He followed those with this absorbing, intensely physical drama set at a rundown motel in the Mojave Desert, based on the play by Sam Shepard, who also stars as a rodeo stunt rider trying to convince his ex-girlfriend (a marvelous Basinger, in one of her first starring roles) that they should rekindle their flame—even as she awaits the arrival of her current boyfriend (Quaid). Shepard’s theater work has been a major influence on Wes Anderson and Owen Wilson and is reflected in Asteroid City’s portrait of life on the edge of the desert. DO NOT DETONATE… features a short story by Shepard and an essay on Shepard by Hilton Als.
