For the seventh consecutive year, First Look presents Jury award–winning graduate and undergraduate student films from the Jonathan B. Murray Center for Documentary Journalism at the Missouri School of Journalism. All were originally presented at the Stronger Than Fiction Film Festival in Columbia, Missouri. This year’s jurors were Tabitha Jackson, Nanfu Wang, and Eric Hynes. Total running time: 97 mins. All New York premieres
Small Changes
Dir. Maya Bell. 2023, 25 mins. After turning a two-acre farm into a thriving market garden, Eric Parker and her partner exchanged it for 71 empty acres of possibility. Now she’s alone with three young daughters and a dream to fulfill.
Gaze
Dir. Morgan Hadley. 2023, 15 mins. A reflective and physically embodied rumination on the exploitative power of the male gaze.

Dir. Beatričė Bankauskaitė. 2023, 20 mins. When Brandie, a veteran nurse and single mom, is forced to relocate, she struggles to find an affordable place to live. After checking into an extended-stay hotel and taking on two jobs, she dreams of a home of her own.
West
Bradford Siwak. 2023, 37 mins. The first synagogue west of the Mississippi River, United Hebrew in St. Louis eventually relocated further west to the suburbs, a journey mapped by the film in real time, accompanied by voices from the city’s Jewish community discussing changes to the community and landscape.

Tickets: $15 / $11 senior and students / $9 youth (ages 3–17) / discounted for MoMI members ($7–$11). There is a $1.50 transaction fee per ticket for all online purchases. The cost of admission may be applied toward a same-day purchase of a membership.
