Dirs. Agnès Varda, JR. 2017, 94 mins. DCP. In French with English subtitles. Academy Award nominee for Best Documentary. In Varda’s latest project, she teams up with the younger visual artist JR for a road trip across France. JR, an acclaimed photographer and muralist, drives a van equipped with a photo booth and a large format printer, bringing Varda along for visits to agricultural and industrial villages, where encounters with local people and places culminate in giant portraits being pasted to walls, houses, barns, and even shipping containers. Separated in age by more than half a century, the filmmakers dance, sometimes literally, to a similar creative and celebratory beat, and their connection deepens as they collaborate on a project culled from Varda’s own past that also gracefully acknowledges the advancement of time.
