Dir. Peter Sohn. 2023, 101 mins. DCP. With Leah Louis, Mamoudou Athie, Ronnie del Carmen, Shila Ommi, Wendi McLendon-Covey, Catherine O’Hara. Pixar’s 2023 release, nominated for an Oscar for Best Animated Feature, brilliantly renders flames, water drops, clouds, and soil as fully alive characters inhabiting a New York–like metropolis. Director Sohn finds inspiration from his own immigrant family’s story while taking the opposites-attract theme to its extreme with a romance between Fire and Water. Sassy, loyal, and artistic, Ember helps her parents run a homey cafe and grocery that caters to the Fire folk. When the rickety building develops an ominous leak, she encounters Wade, a by-the-books building code inspector. While the two find themselves initially at odds, sparks fly in true romcom fashion as they run around the city hoping to save the family business—and in the process Ember learns to be true to her own heart. Rated PG. Recommended for ages 7+
