Part of Four by Valentyn Vasyanovych
Dir. Valentyn Vasyanovych. Ukraine. 2014. 61 mins. Digital projection. In Ukrainian with English subtitles. In this patiently observed, quietly abiding observational film, Vasyanovych visits his own relatives Maria and her middle-aged son, Sashko, in their idyllic village in Northern Ukraine. Maria, 82, still cares for Sashko, blinded by diabetes, while Sashko, in turn, is fiercely devoted to his aging mother. A devastating meditation on the ties that bind.
Preceded by: Counterclockwise (Against the Sun)
Dir. Valentyn Vasyanovych. Ukraine. 2004, 20 mins. A young potter who spins his wheel “against the sun” shares his philosophy of life, horses around with his friends, and builds a clay sculpture on the beach, while his unseen wife alternately praises and criticizes him on the soundtrack. This whimsically constructed documentary portrait, beautifully shot on black-and-white 16mm film, is a film of boisterous, irreverent spirit.
