Dir. Edward L. Cahn. 1955, 69 mins. 35mm. With Richard Jennings, Angela Stevens, S. John Launer, Michael Granger, Gregory Gaye. This film marks the slow-building shift toward a more “raceless” zombie figure, discarding the symbolically Black trappings of Haiti and voodoo. Instead, references to World War II and the Cold War are brought to the foreground. Yet no matter how desperately evaded, race is never far behind. A ruthless gangster, forced to flee America under the threat of deportation, employs the Nazi scientist he encountered in Europe to send radioactive zombies after his enemies. This also makes the first of Cahn’s trilogy of zombie features presented in this program.
