Dir. Henry Selick. 2009, 100 mins. Presented in Dolby Digital 3-D. With the voices of Dakota Fanning, Teri Hatcher, Ian McShane. After moving to a new town, an inquisitive girl discovers a portal to a parallel universe in her house. But the alternate reality she discovers isn’t as perfect as it first seems. Based on the beloved children’s novel by Neil Gaiman, Coraline, which was the first feature from LAIKA Studios, marries old-school stop-motion puppetry with expressive 3-D cinematography for a work that is both whimsical and scary. With its surreal imagery and gothic horror touches, Coraline is a work of astounding imagination. Recommended for ages 9 and up.
