Everything about this ribald comic confection from director Hudlin—knocking it out of the park in his follow-up to sleeper smash House Party—still breaks the mold, most spectacularly it is absurdly stocked supporting cast of actresses, each who seems to be having the time of her lives, from the legendary Eartha Kitt as sexually bold cosmetics mogul Lady Eloise to the one-and-only Grace Jones as glamazon fashion model Helen Strangé to a fresh-faced Halle Berry as the coworker who might be Marcus’s true love interest. This wildly funny, sophisticated vehicle for Murphy’s too-infrequently tapped skills as a romantic leading man was among the biggest hits of 1992, and all but set the template for the modern-day Black romantic comedy.
