Dir. Brian De Palma. 1981, 108 mins. 35mm. With John Travolta, Nancy Allen, John Lithgow, Dennis Franz. John Travolta gives one of his strongest performances as a movie sound man in De Palma’s masterful and ambitious variation on Michelangelo Antonioni’s Blow Up. This darkly comic, disturbing political thriller, in which Travolta’s Jack thinks he’s recorded a Chappaquiddick-like murder and falls for a hooker (Allen) connected to the plot, features some of De Palma’s most elaborate location photography, including a lavish grand finale set amidst Philadelphia’s Liberty Day celebration. It’s also one of his most brilliantly thought through meta-commentaries on the thriller form, culminating in an unforgettable and tragic punchline. (Released July 24, 1981)
