Dir. Gurinder Chadha. UK. 2002, 112 mins. 35mm. With Parminda Nagra, Keira Knightley, Jonathan Rhys Meyers, Anupam Kher, Juliet Stevenson, Shaznay Lewis, Archie Panjabi. In this global Y2K-era hit, Jess (Nagra) wants to pursue a passion for football, to the chagrin of her parents, who want her to live up to their ideas of a woman’s duties and fear for her acceptance due to their own traumatic experiences. While the romantic storyline is ostensibly between Jess her coach, Joe (Jonathan Rhys Meyers), a handsome Irishman who somewhat problematically equates the oppression of her people with that of his own, the film has long been claimed by the queer community for the far more potent attraction between Jess and her tomboy teammate Jules, played by Knightley, in the role that launched her career.
