Dir. Valentyn Vasyanovych. Ukraine. 2019, 108 mins. In Ukrainian with English subtitles. DCP. With Andriy Rymaruk, Liudmyla Bileka, Vasyl Antoniak. In this ominous, visionary masterstroke of speculative fiction, it’s 2025 and Eastern Ukraine lies ravaged and desolate. Seeking salvation, Sergey, a defeated former soldier haunted by his experiences, meets Katya and volunteers for an effort, dubbed the Black Tulip mission, to exhume the forgotten dead. As they carry out their dreary but cathartic labor, the two grow closer, catching a glimmer of a chance at a new life.
