Snubbed: Amy Adams
Dir. Denis Villeneuve. 2016, U.S. 116 mins. DCP. With Amy Adams, Jeremy Renner, Forest Whitaker, Michael Stuhlbarg, Mark O’Brien. When Arrival’s eight nominations were announced in early 2017, including Best Picture, Director, Screenplay, and Cinematography, one category was conspicuously, head-scratchingly absent. Going into awards season a presumed front-runner, Amy Adams somehow was left off the list for Best Actress, despite being the emotional anchor for Villeneuve’s brainy, gripping alien drama. As Louise Banks, a linguist touched by personal tragedy who is hired by the U.S. military to help decipher and translate messages from extraterrestrial spacecrafts hovering ominously over various spots on our planet, Adams provides the film’s deep well of emotion as well as its no-nonsense pragmatism. Arrival is one of Villeneuve’s most fully realized works, and Adams helps provide the small-scale humanity that is elegantly set against its wide sci-fi canvas.
