With director Sarvnik Kaur in person
Dir. Sarvnik Kaur. 2023, 97 mins. DCP. In Koli, Marathi, and Hindi with English subtitles. A lyrical and beautifully observed portrait of a friendship tested by the strains of the modern world, Against the Tide depicts the struggles of Bombay fishermen Rakesh and Ganesh, inheritors of the great Koli knowledge system—a way to harvest the sea by following the moon and the tides. Rakesh has kept faith in the traditional fishing methods while Ganesh has strayed from them, embracing technology. The film tells a tale of deep friendship and rising conflict between the two men against the backdrop of an adoring sea, which is increasingly turning hostile because of climate change.
