The latest film from Midnight Family director Luke Lorentzen spends a year inside New York’s Mount Sinai hospital following Mati, a chaplain-in-training who’s completing a residency providing spiritual care to people confronting profound life changes. Through Mati’s experiences with her patients, her struggle with professional burnout, and her own spiritual questioning, the film explores the meaningfulness of connection and the pain of its absence. One of the most affecting works of nonfiction in recent memory, A Still Small Voice presents two extraordinarily intimate perspectives at once: that of patients and families sharing their wisdom, fears, and grief; and that of Mati, who’s no less present or giving when she’s simply listening, witnessing. Her expressive face dominates Lorentzen’s searching, attentive film, and speaks to an immersive collaboration between filmmaker and subject that can only be achieved over time and via significant trust. Their film is a testament to the importance and of the costs of care. Winner of the Sundance Film Festival Prize for Best Director, U.S. Documentary Competition.
