Wall Writers
Ongoing
Location: Bartos Screening Room
With SNAKE 1, SJK 171, ROCKY 184, and MIKE 171 in person
Directed by Roger Gastman. 2016. 77 mins. Narrated by John Waters. Before Banksy and Shepard Fairey became household names, graffiti originators with monikers like CORNBREAD, TAKI 183, LSD OM, and MIKE 171 roamed cities and scaled walls to express themselves and claim visible space for their art. These graffiti pioneers gave birth to a movement that would help to transform city life, public transit, public art, and ultimately visual art around the world. Directed by artist and longtime scene-chronicler Roger Gastman and narrated by filmmaker John Waters, Wall Writers features unprecedented access to and exclusive interviews with the form’s trailblazers, offering an intimate look at the daring early days of graffiti art in Philadelphia and New York during the late 60s and early 70s, and tracing the form’s explosion into the contemporary mainstream.
