Dir. John Ford. 1953, 90 mins. Archival 35mm. With Charles Winninger, Arleen Whelan. Charles Winninger’s alcoholic judge takes a bittersweet view of post-Reconstruction America in Ford’s loose remake his own 1934 Judge Priest, restoring that film’s lynching scene, which had been removed by the studio. Ford’s favorite of his films, and also a favorite of Jonathan Rosenbaum, who called it “a ceremonial elegy and testament to everything that he loves and respects.”
