The Man from Laramie

Ongoing

Dir. Anthony Mann. 1955, 104 mins. 35mm. With James Stewart, Arthur Kennedy, Donald Crisp. The toughest of the Mann-James Stewart westerns, their final collaboration superbly maximizes color and CinemaScope while incorporating themes from Winchester ‘73 and from Shakespeare’s King Lear. As the hardened title figure, Stewart arrives in an unfriendly New Mexico town searching for gunrunners responsible for his brother’s death. For Mann, The Man From Laramie summarized his alliance with Stewart. “That work distilled our relationship. I reprised themes and situations by pushing them to their paroxysm.”
