The mathematician and cryptanalyst Alan Turing—who worked during World War II with a motley group of scholars, linguists, chess champions, and intelligence officers—was credited with cracking the so-called unbreakable codes of Germany’s Enigma machine. He was a pioneer of modern computing who also led a tortured personal life, and was arrested after the war for homosexuality. An intense and layered portrayal of the gifted scientist, brilliantly played by Benedict Cumberbatch, The Imitation Game is one of the year’s most eagerly awaited films. The screening will be followed by a discussion with the film’s screenwriter, Graham Moore, and Janna Levin to discuss the reality, the legacy, and the film’s dramatic portrayal of Alan Turing.
