Nowhere Girl

Dir. Mamoru Oshii. 2015. 85 mins. DCP. In Japanese with English subtitles. The latest film from Mamoru Oshii (Ghost in the Shell) centers on the beautiful and talented Ai (Seino), a standout student at an all-girls art high school. Resentment over her abilities–from classmates and instructors alike–provokes a torrent of bullying, mockery and intolerable cruelty. As her daily life becomes an endless war, Ai stoically suffers it all–up to a point. Soon everyone will discover that there’s more to the mild-mannered Ai than meets the eye: She has a very specific, very fierce set of skills that are ready to be put into action.
