Dir. Robert Altman. 1975, 159 mins. DCP. With Keith Carradine, Geraldine Chaplin, Henry Gibson, Lily Tomlin. The high point of Altman’s prolific career was this panoramic view of American life circa 1975, set in the nation’s country-music capital. Cramming his super-wide screen with the comings and goings of a 24-character ensemble, Altman creates an incredible cacophonous entertainment, equal parts comedy and tragedy, which features terrific original songs and an unforgettable ending. The film seems brilliantly prophetic in its portrayal of the link between American entertainment and politics.
