Dir. Steven Bernstein. 2013, 91 mins. DCP. With Samantha Morton, Helen Hunt, Aaron Paul. Based on actual events, Decoding Annie Parker interweaves the story of two women, one whose life has been devastated by breast cancer, one whose pioneering research led to a major breakthrough in the battle against it. Annie Parker (Samantha Morton) is a 29-year-old who has lost her mother and sister to breast cancer when she herself is diagnosed with the disease. Mary-Claire King (Helen Hunt) is a geneticist who was convinced there was a genetic link to breast cancer and dedicated her career to finding it. King discovered the BRCA gene mutation that causes an increased risk for breast and ovarian cancers. Decoding Annie Parker, which won the 2013 Alfred P. Sloan Feature Film Prize at the Hamptons International Film Festival, tells the story of these two remarkable women.
