99 Homes

With Michael Shannon in person
Dir. Ramin Bahrani. 2014. 112 min. DCP courtesy of Broad Green Pictures. With Andrew Garfield, Michael Shannon, Laura Dern. The latest from Ramin Bahrani (“The new great American director” —Roger Ebert), 99 Homes is an incisive and timely drama about the infamous 2008 housing bubble. After hardened real estate agent Rick Carver (Michael Shannon) forces construction worker Dennis Nash (Andrew Garfield) and his mother (Laura Dern) to vacate their house, Nash finds a reprieve in Carver’s employ—a darkly ironic, though also profitable, turn of events. In the avaristic free-for-all that followed the subprime mortgage meltdown, Nash’s cold metamorphosis from foreclosed to forecloser may be par for the course. Featuring an inspired and enthralling performance by Shannon as a Gordon Gekko-like Machiavellian fiend who is as charismatic as he is cruel. This special members-only screening will be followed by a conversation with Michael Shannon.
