Dir. Wang Bing. 2024, 160 mins. China. In Mandarin with English subtitles. DCP. Following Youth (Hard Times), Wang Bing concludes his transformative observational triptych of documentaries about young migrant garment workers barely scraping by while working far from their rural homes in the Zhili district of Huzhou City. In this final installment of the five-years-in-the-making epic, the scope is expanded to include scenes of the workers returning home to their small towns for New Year’s celebrations with their families, riding packed trains and negotiating perilous mountain roads and celebrating weddings. But there’s always the inevitable return to work. Homecoming is an overwhelming and surprisingly emotional ending to one of the most remarkable works of nonfiction filmmaking of recent years.
