Dir. Pavel G. Vesnakov. 2024, 93 mins. Bulgaria/Italy. DCP. In Bulgarian with English subtitles. With Ognyan Pavlov (aka Fyre), Veselin Petrov. After years working in Spain, a brooding, taciturn young man (Bulgarian rapper Fyre) returns to his village in rural Bulgaria to clean out his late father’s flat. As he reconnects with old friends and relatives, he hears tales of his father, but he cannot square these stories of a fiercely protective, deeply loving man with the remote patriarch of his childhoodA film of richly textured images, shot in a square 1:1 aspect ratio that perfectly evokes large format portraiture, Vesnakov’s Windless endows its classic story of filial reckoning with a precise visual language that’s both thrillingly unfamiliar and poetically apt. 2024 European Film Awards Selection.
