What About Bob?
Sunday, Oct 27 at 1:30 p.m.
Location: Redstone Theater
Dir. Frank Oz. 1991, 99 mins. 35mm. With Bill Murray, Richard Dreyfuss, Julie Hagerty, Charlie Korsmo, Kathryn Erbe, Fran Brill. When agoraphobic shut-in Bob Wiley (Murray) shows up at his office one day, little does uptight psychiatrist Dr. Leo Marvin (Dreyfuss) know that he’s about to be plunged into his own absurd nightmare. Bob, so immediately reassured by his new therapist’s “Baby Steps” cure to self-actualization, follows Leo to his summer home, where—to his increasing horror—his wife (Hagerty) and kids take an immense liking to the sweet but clingy basket case. Pitting Murray’s open-hearted emotional mess against Dreyfuss’s slow-burn implosion, What About Bob? is an endlessly entertaining, quotable (“I’m sailing!”) comedy in which Oz expertly mixes warmth and dark humor with the lightest of touches.
