Dir. Tran Anh Hung. 2023, France. 135 mins. DCP. With Juliette Binoche, Benoît Magimel, Emmanuel Salinger. An epicurean feast for the senses set in late nineteenth century that’s also a profoundly moving film about how we create meaning and sustain happiness, The Taste of Things (originally titled The Pot-au-Feu in France) was the deserved winner of the Best Director prize at the Cannes Film Festival for Tran Anh Hung (The Scent of Green Papaya). Magimel plays gourmet chef Dodin and Binoche his loyal cook Eugénie, whose dedication to their work over decades cloaks a simmering romance. During a succession of gloriously appointed meals, captured by cinematographer Jonathan Ricquebourg with adoration and precision, we come to know these richly drawn characters, for whom the culinary process becomes a demonstration of love. A work of intense tactile pleasure and virtuosity that’s certainly one of the films of the year. An IFC Films release.
