The Storm (Da Yu)

Location: Redstone Theater

Dir. Busifan (Yang Zhigang). 2024, 102 mins. China. DCP. In Mandarin with English subtitles. A young boy, Mantou (affectionately known as Bao), travels with his adoptive father, Daguzi, through an abandoned village looking for sustenance and treasures. Their destination is a mysterious black ship, which once served as the vessel for a theater troupe. With lush backgrounds awash in soft-edged, painterly strokes, Busifan’s visually stunning adventure tale conjures a world of mythic Chinese landscapesiconic mountains, gently swaying reeds, jade-hued waters—for an intriguing tale of soldiers and peasants, monsters and ghosts. When the rain starts, the action accelerates, culminating in a showstopping climax, but the heart of the movie lies in the bond between father and son. Be sure to stay through the end credits! Recommended for ages 10+
