Dir. Frank Oz. 2004, 93 mins. DCP. With Nicole Kidman, Matthew Broderick, Bette Midler, Roger Bart, Christopher Walken, Glenn Close, Faith Hill. Married couple Joanna (Kidman) and Walter (Broderick) are the newest residents in well-manicured Stepford, Connecticut. Noticing that her female neighbors all seem to be cut from the same mold, and creepily deferential to their husbands, Joanna begins to think something suspicious is afoot, fearful that she’s the next to be forcibly conformed. In this second feature film adaptation of Ira Levin’s best-selling novel, the classic skewering of white-collar suburbia, screenwriter Paul Rudnick (in his second collaboration with Frank Oz, following In & Out) tamps down the sci-fi and dials up the comedy—and the feminist comeuppance.
