Dir Frank Oz. 2001, 123 mins. DCP. With Robert De Niro, Marlon Brando, Edward Norton, Angela Bassett, Gary Farmer. Marking a major departure from his comedic wheelhouse, Oz directed this taut crime thriller starring acting titans Brando and De Niro in their first and only pairing. Expert safecracker Nick Wells (De Niro) decides it’s time to settle down with girlfriend Diane (Bassett) and focus on running a jazz nightclub in Montreal, but his friend and partner Max (Brando) has other plans. Heavily in debt to a crime boss, Max needs Nick to pull one last heist: nabbing a $30 million scepter from the House of Customs with the help of a novice thief (Norton). But what starts out as a safe bet turns into a high-risk gamble when a clash of egos threatens to bring them all down.
