Location: Redstone Theater
Dir. Alejandro Amenábar. 2001, 104 mins. Spain/France/U.S. DCP. For this year’s special screening after the Museum’s Day of the Dead celebration, we present Amenábar’s brilliant 2001 ghost story The Others. Nicole Kidman gives an intensely moving performance as a young British mother awaiting her husband’s return from the front lines of World War I. While looking after her two young children, whose photosensitivity ensures that no sunlight penetrates the inner sanctum of their remote gothic mansion, she comes to believe that she and her family are far from alone. Elegant, scary, and capped with a twist that’s both exquisitely handled and emotionally devastating, The Others is one of the best horror movies of the new century, a film that burrows deep into the relationships we hold with loved ones even after they have passed on, whether as photographic images or as spirits kept close to our hearts.
