Dir. David Fincher. 2023, U.S. 118 mins. DCP. With Michael Fassbender, Tilda Swinton, Arliss Howard, Charles Parnell, Kerry O’Malley, Sala Baker, Sophie Charlotte. Fincher deconstructs the myth of the movie hit man with sardonic relish in this teasingly self-reflexive tour de force. Adapted by Andrew Kevin Walker (Seven) from a French graphic novel, yet shorn of its alibis of humanizing backstory and pop existentialism, this ruthlessly efficient film parlays a typically melodramatic revenge setup into an unsparing critique of professional narcissism gone amuck. A neurotically meticulous assassin, embodied by a sphinxlike Fassbender, uncharacteristically botches his job, witnesses the ugly consequences, and proceeds to take it out on everyone but himself. From Paris to Santo Domingo to New Orleans, he cuts a bloody path further and further astray of the dictates of his vocational creed until all that remains is his vacant proficiency.
