Dir. Frank Oz. 1995, 96 mins. 35mm. With Hal Scardino, Litefoot, Lindsay Crouse, Richard Jenkins, David Keith, Rishi Bhat. The best-selling children’s novel by Lynne Reid Banks comes to entrancing life in Oz’s richly realized adaptation. When nine-year-old Omri (Scardino) receives a cupboard for his birthday, he soon realizes that with just one turn of a magical key, the toys he puts inside come to life. He first realizes he has this special ability when he animates a Native American figurine named Little Bear (Litefoot). Omri begins to share a special bond with the Iroquois man, learning about his past in the French and Indian War, yet with the child’s great, godlike power comes great responsibility. Sensitive, mysterious, and visually dazzling, Oz’s film is a carefully crafted cinematic treatment of a beloved book.
