Dir. Magnus von Horn. 2024, 115 mins. Denmark. In Danish with English subtitles. DCP. With Vic Carmen Sonne, Trine Dyrholm, Besir Zeciri, Joachim Fjelstrup, Tessa Hoder, Avo Knox Martin. In post-WWI Copenhagen, a young factory worker named Karoline (Sonne) is left to fend for herself when her husband doesn’t return from the battlefield. After engaging in an affair with her boss, she winds up unemployed, abandoned, and pregnant. Seeking help, she meets the charismatic Dagmar (Dyrholm), who takes her in to help run an underground adoption agency for unwanted children. The two women bond, until a sudden revelation changes everything. Writer-director Magnus von Horn realizes this chilling true story as an ink-etched gothic horror tale that’s both eerie and exquisite, historically transporting and profoundly resonant for our time. Shortlisted for the 2025 Academy Award for Best International Feature Film.
