Part of See It Big at the ’90s Multiplex
Dir. Terry Gilliam. 1991, 137 mins. U.S. Director-approved 4K restored DCP. With Jeff Bridges, Robin Williams, Mercedes Ruehl, Amanda Plummer, Michael Jeter. Gilliam balances tragedy and comedy, fantasy and realism, romance and adventure, in this extremely early-’90s tale of a disgraced radio shock jock (Bridges) who finds redemption in both the friendship of a mentally ill, homeless man (Williams) who believes himself to be a knight on a quest for the Holy Grail, and the furiously conditional love of a video store proprietor (Ruehl, who won an Oscar for her deliciously animated performance). From a sharp and sensitive script by nineties screenwriter extraordinaire Richard LaGravenese, Gilliam constructs a splendid alternate, near-fantasy version of Manhattan, which locates the beauty and horror of city life as vividly as any movie of its era.
