Dir. David Cronenberg. 1983, 105 mins. U.S. DCP. With Christopher Walken, Brooke Adams, Martin Sheen, Colleen Dewhurst, Herbert Lom, Tom Skerritt. Cronenberg’s chilling yet bracing adaptation of Stephen King’s supernatural novel is one of the director’s most elegantly constructed films, moving from a gripping murder mystery to a political melodrama. Walken gives a performance of strange and singular poignancy as Johnny Smith, a New England teacher who survives a terrifying car accident and is reborn with second sight—the ability to see tragedies before they occur. The gift, of course, turns out to be a curse. After helping the local police chief solve a string of serial killings, Johnny becomes embroiled in the sordid and catastrophic affairs of a folksy populist presidential candidate, played by a frightening Sheen, worlds away from The West Wing. With its effortlessly achieved winter atmosphere, mix of political cynicism and humanity, and unforgettable ending, Cronenberg’s film shows a master at the top of his game.
