SCREENING
The Blues Brothers
Friday, Oct 18 at 4:00 p.m.
Location: Redstone Theater
Dir. John Landis. 1980, 133 mins. 35mm. With John Belushi, Dan Aykroyd, James Brown, Ray Charles, Carrie Fisher, Cab Calloway, Henry Gibson, Aretha Franklin, Frank Oz. Landis’s big-canvas extrapolation of Belushi and Aykroyd’s blues and soul duo is the most wildly entertaining and unexpected adaptation of a Saturday Night Live skit of all time, an action-comedy spectacle wall-to-wall with legendary R&B stars. Donning their trademark black suits, pencil ties, fedoras, and sunglasses, two deadpan blood brothers Jake and Elwood are on a “mission from God,” attempting to stop the closing of the Catholic orphanage they grew up in. Pursued by all forms of antagonists, from cops to neo-Nazis, the brothers’ mission explodes into anarchy, featuring some of the greatest car chases captured on film, a plethora of electric musical performances, and a lineup of filmmaker cameos, from Oz to Spielberg to Chaka Khan.
