That Sinking Feeling
Ongoing
Location: Redstone Theater
Dir. Bill Forsyth. 1979, 93 mins. 35mm. With Tom Mannion, Eddie Burt, Richard Demarco. As gritty as it is charming, Bill Forsyth’s debut film, made with a cast of actors from the Glasgow Youth Theater and a budget so low (5,000 pounds) that it made it into the Guinness Book of World Records, is an ambling caper film about a scheme to rob a local plumbing-supply warehouse and profit from the “ill-gotten drains.” Filmed in 16mm in the back streets, vacant lots, and crumbling buildings of Glasgow, the film playfully reinvents kitchen-sink realism.
