Symbol of the Unconquered

Sunday, Feb 9 at 12:30 p.m.

Location: Bartos Screening Room

Dir. Oscar Micheaux. 1920, 59 mins. U.S. DCP. One of Micheaux’s only surviving films, Symbol of the Unconquered follows the character of Eve Mason (Iris Hall) from Alabama to the American Northwest after learning of the death of her grandfather and that she has inherited land from his former homestead. Though she gains the kind help of her homesteader neighbor Hugh (Walker Thompson), she finds herself caught in a battle for the property with a gang of racist white criminals who want the land for the oil reserve that bubbles beneath it. Micheaux’s depictions of the Ku Klux Klan remain among the most vivid and frightening in cinema, providing crucial corrective to Griffith’s racist blockbuster Birth of a Nation.
