Dir. Roy Andersson. 2000, 100 mins. DCP. With Lars Nordh, Stefan Larsson, Bengt C.W. Carlsson, Torbjörn Fahlström, Sten Andersson. Making a stunning return to feature filmmaking after a 25-year hiatus, Andersson introduced what would become his signature style with this bleak and beautiful deadpan gem. The film is composed of 46 tableaus, visions of quotidian life falling apart under the relentless cruelty of the capitalist world. A worker clings to the legs of the boss who fired him; a failed crucifix salesman discards his unsold stock; a young girl is casually sacrificed from a cliff in front of a large, silent crowd. “His humor is sublime,” wrote Ari Aster, placing the film on his Sight & Sound all-time top ten list, “informed by a very Swedish pessimism, and his vignettesBuñuel by way of Tati by way of Kafka in aphoristic modeare among the great gifts in modern movies.”
