These films see their makers using the personal documentary format to fracture and restructure their relationships with their parents. In Complaints of a Dutiful Daughter (Academy Award Nominee, Best Documentary Feature, 1995), Deborah Hoffmann casts herself as her main interview subject as she relates, with humor and humanity, the story of caring for a mother with Alzheimer’s disease. In Sink or Swim (inducted into the National Film Registry in 2015), Su Friedrich examines her relationship with her distant father from childhood using text and 26 short vignettes, building to an overwhelming depiction of the impact a parent has on a child.
