With director Kelly Reichardt in person
Dir. Kelly Reichardt. 2022, U.S. 108 mins. DCP. With Michelle Williams, Hong Chau, Judd Hirsch, André Benjamin, Heather Lawless. American independent treasure Reichardt (First Cow) brings her unique brand of contemplative humanism to this observant portrait of artistic creation and disruption set in Portland. Reichardt’s frequent collaborator Williams stars as a sculptor, living amidst a community of artists and academics, racing to finish her work for a looming gallery opening. As the deadline approaches, she also must deal with conflict from her frazzled landlord, also an artist (Chau); struggle with ongoing family crises; and take care of an injured pigeon. Reichardt brilliantly and precisely balances a subtly comic tone with deeper questions of what it means to be a creative person in a world that barely gives you the means to support yourself. An A24 release.
