Dir. Pietro Marcello. 2022, France/Italy/Germany. 100 mins. DCP. With Räphael Terry, Juliette Jouan, Louis Garrel. Returning home to his village in Normandy after fighting in the first world war, Räphael (Terry) learns that his wife had died, leaving their baby daughter, Juliette, in his care. From this gritty, earthy opening, Scarlet, from Martin Eden director Pietro Marcello, blossoms into an entirely surprising shapeshifter, following Juliette (Jouan) as she grows up to be a curious young woman who falls under the spell of a local witch. Incorporating elements of mythic fairy tale, pastoral romance, documentary, and even musical, Scarlet is a singular work of magic realism, also featuring Garrel as a handsome pilot who crash-lands right into Juliette’s life. A Kino Lorber release.
