Dir. Davy Chou. 2022, South Korea/France/Germany. 115 mins, DCP. With Ji-Min Park, Oh Kwang-rok, Kim Sun-young. A film that moves to its own surprising internal rhythms to convey the universal feeling of not belonging, Return to Seoul is the marvelous breakthrough from Cambodian-French director Davy Chou. The singular Ji-Min Park—in her first screen role, unfathomably—stars as an impulsive French woman in her twenties named Freddie, vacationing in South Korea; while there she decides on a whim to try and locate the birth parents she never knew. This begins a journey that spans years and covers ever-shifting, unpredictable terrain, embodying one woman’s spirit of adventure while also committing to an interior psychological portraiture trapped in its own processes of becoming. A Sony Pictures Classics release.
