Dir. Bill Murray, Howard Franklin. 1990, 89 mins. U.S. 35mm. With Bill Murray, Geena Davis, Randy Quaid, Jason Robards. Down–on–his–luck hustler Grimm (Murray) dons a clown costume and pulls off a complex million-dollar heist at a New York City bank, abetted by his girlfriend (Davis) and dim best friend (Quaid). Though he’s now hoping to start a new life, between the car troubles, traffic, subway, and bus delays, fellow criminals and street characters, simply getting out of the city proves harder than robbing a bank. Bill Murray’s first and to-date only directorial credit, Quick Change is a rollicking, finely tuned farce that paints New York with a broad but affectionate brush, exulting in the culturally rich chaos that befuddles the hapless trio. Shot (by legendary DP Michael Chapman) all around the city, including in gloriously commonplace locations in Queens, the film drops whiplash–inducing cameos in every scene, from Bob Elliott’s testy bank guard to Phil Hartman, Stanley Tucci, Tony Shalhoub, and Philip Bosco as the principled bus driver from hell. A sleeper selection for the New York film pantheon.
