Part of Curators’ Choice 2023
Dir. Yorgos Lanthimos. 2023, U.S./U.K./Ireland. 120 mins. DCP. With Emma Stone, Mark Ruffalo, Willem Dafoe, Ramy Youssef, Hanna Schygulla, Jerrod Carmichael, Kathryn Hunter, Christopher Abbott. Even compared to the myriad provocations of his brilliant career so far, Greek filmmaker Yorgos Lanthimos (Dogtooth, The Lobster, The Favorite) stuns with the bold, brave Poor Things, a stimulating and intricately designed fairy tale that recapitulates and reimagines the Frankenstein myth as a story of feminist awakening. Stone is remarkably committed as Bella, a grown woman who moves and acts like a boisterous, curious toddler. The bizarre truth about her peculiarity is only known to the mysterious scientist Godwin Baxter (Dafoe) who takes care of her and the scientist’s apprentice (Youssef) who falls in love with her. As she begins to see more of the world, after tagging along with a sexually hungry lawyer (Ruffalo), who’s a bit of a man-child himself, she expands in both intellect and political revelation. Lanthimos’s highly irreverent, occasionally shocking science-fiction is a drama of outrageous brilliance. A Searchlight Pictures release.
