New York on Location

Part of Open Worlds
12:00 p.m.– 4:00 p.m.
MoMI, Theatrical Teamsters Local 817, IATSE Local 52, and Kaufman Astoria Studios will present New York on Location, a free family-friendly outdoor afternoon event that offers a behind-the-scenes look at film production in New York. The public will have the rare opportunity to go inside working movie trailers and trucks—straight from productions shooting in New York—and speak directly with movie professionals about their work. Trucks will include star dressing rooms, electrical, grip, prop, camera, hair and makeup, wardrobe, special effects, and more. Key film craftspeople will demonstrate and explain firsthand their roles in the moviemaking process and how they got there. Food will be available for purchase from local food trucks and Mon Amour at the MoMI Café.
New York on Location will take place in the backlot at Kaufman Astoria Studios, at the Museum, and on surrounding streets. Remarks begin at 12:00 p.m. in the backlot at Kaufman Astoria Studios featuring State Senator Michael N. Gianaris, Commissioner of the Mayor’s Office of Media and Entertainment Pat Swinney Kaufman, and Council Member Tiffany Cabán. In the Backlot, makeup artists and hair stylists will demonstrate applications for glamour looks and bruises; and experience the weather effects, including rain and snow, created by special-effects artists!
At the Museum’s Fox Amphitheater, dive into virtual reality and learn how to create your own three-dimensional world with the application Multibrush, with hundreds of brushes, colors, and textures to choose from. The only limit is your imagination! Sessions are limited to 15 minutes and recommended for ages 12 and up.
Experience a 40-minute guided Museum tour through Behind the Screen. You will learn the histories and professions that make the moving image our most ubiquitous art form. The interactive experience offers a comprehensive dive into special effects makeup, costume and production design, and the evolution of film cameras. Tours are offered at 1:00 p.m., 1:40 p.m., 2:20 p.m., and 3:00 p.m. (sold out). Museum entry is 20% off for all visitors on this day.
