Nausicaä of the Valley of the Wind

Saturday, Jan 20 at 12:30 pm

Location: Redstone Theater

Dir. Hayao Miyazaki. 1984, 117 mins. DCP. In Japanese with English subtitles. Miyazaki’s pivotal early feature, Nausicaä was released 40 years ago in Japan. Many of the themes in this visually sumptuous film have resonated throughout Miyazaki’s career, up to and including his latest film, The Boy and the Heron. In a postapocalyptic world consumed by war and pollution, Nausicaä and her people of the Valley of the Wind have carved out a hard-won haven, coexisting with the giant insects that swarm the forests and plains. While others may see such creatures as threats, Nausicaä believes they are guardians of the natural world. The valley’s quiet life is disrupted when a large aircraft crash-lands in their midst. As they resist the interlopers and battle toxic fungi, Nausicaä leads her people with bravery, motivated by a desire to protect all living things.
