Mothra vs. Godzilla

Location: Redstone Theater

Dir. Ishiro Honda. 1964, 88 mins. Japan. DCP. In Japanese with English subtitles. With Akira Takarada, Yuriko Hoshi, Hiroshi Koizumi, Yoshifumi Tajima, Kenji Sahara, Emi and Yumi Itō, Haruo Nakajima. Journalists Ichiro Sakai and Junko are covering the wreckage of a typhoon when an enormous egg belonging to Mothra is found in Japanese waters and claimed by greedy capitalists. They refuse the egg’s safe return, even after the efforts of the Shobojin, Mothra’s twin fairies. At the same time, Godzilla reemerges and leads a path of destruction through Japan towards the egg. Now, humanity must ask for Mothra’s help against this threat in what many consider director Ishiro Honda’s magnum opus and the finest sequel in the Godzilla franchise, noting the film’s social commentary, colorful characters, and exceptional effects. Recommended for ages 8+
