Directed by J.J. Abrams. Written by Alex Kurtzman & Roberto Orci & J.J. Abrams. 2006, 126 mins. DCP. Starring Tom Cruise, Philip Seymour Hoffman, Ving Rhames. Impressed by J. J. Abrams’s work on the television series Alias and Lost, producer Cruise invited Abrams to co-write and direct Mission: Impossible III. The film introduces a greater level of emotional depth to the Mission: Impossible storyline, emphasizing character development and high personal stakes. Engaged to be married, Cruise’s Ethan Hunt is pulled out of retirement to rescue a protégé from notorious arms dealer Owen Davian (Philip Seymour Hoffman), who is threatening to unleash a mysterious weapon code-named “rabbit’s foot.” In settings that include the Vatican, Shanghai, and Virginia’s Chesapeake Bay Bridge, Abrams balances gritty action sequences with intimate moments that reveal Hunt’s vulnerabilities and the tension between his professional and personal commitments.
