Ethan Hunt (Cruise) is freed from a Russian prison by fellow IMF agents Benji Dunn (Pegg) and Jane Carter (Patton). Along with IMF “analyst” William Brandt (Renner), they must retrieve a nuclear launch device and its code from the nefarious villain Cobalt. Hunt and Benji infiltrate the Kremlin and use an ingenious projection system to hide their presence. Shortly after they escape the building, the Kremlin explodes, and the IMF team is blamed. Director Brad Bird, whose previous work had been solely in animated films (Pixar favorites Ratatouille, The Incredibles) pushes physicality and physics to their limits. His film features some of the most spectacular stunt work of the series, including a sequence that hangs Cruise off the side of Dubai’s Burj Khalifa, the world’s tallest building.
